Psychologists study the way people feel, think, act and interact, and by using a range of strategies and therapeutic approaches work with a client to reduce distress and encourage adaptive functioning and emotional wellbeing.
Psychologists are experts in human behaviour and can assist people who are having difficulty understanding or regulating (managing) their emotions, thinking and behaviour, including those with mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, and those with serious and enduring mental illness.
For more information about the qualifications of psychologists see information from the Australian Psychological Society here.
What is a Registered Psychologist?
All psychologists are legally required to register with the Psychologist Board of Australia (PBA) via AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency), in the same way medical practitioners must be registered.
This means that they must be competent and follow a strict Code of Conduct. Some psychologists have studied and qualified in a specific specialised area of psychology, and have been approved to provide services in that area. They will have general registration as well as an endorsement and/or specialised qualifications in their area of specialisation.
Psychologists at BMD Psychology Consulting are qualified, registered and highly competent practitioners.
For more information, visit AHPRA at this page.
Many practicing psychologists are also members of the Australian Psychological Society (APS), identified by MAPS after their name or title, and sometimes showing the APS logo on their business stationary. These practitioners have had to further demonstrate their competence and appropriateness to practice as psychologists.
The APS website is a rich resource for clients and psychologists alike.
Consulting an APS psychologist ensures you receive expert psychological services of the highest standard. APS psychologists follow guidelines about professional conduct, responsibilities and confidentiality that are set and monitored by the Society in the APS Code of Ethics.
The firm's managing director, Brenda Dolieslager, is a registered psychologist with a specialist endorsement, training and qualifications in clinical psychology and specialist qualifications in criminal justice psychology. She is also a full member of the APS, as well as its New Zealand equivalent (the NZ Psychological Society), and is a full member of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists, and the NZ Institute of Clinical Psychologists.
Jennifer Menon is also a member of the APS and also has specialised training and endorsement as a clinical psychologist, as well as a registered supervisor.
